Destigmmatizing the Flu Vaccine

Problem

The National Institutes of Health wanted to study the reasons some Americans were opting not to get a flu shot in order to identify the most effective way to overcome those barriers.

Solution

NIH engaged Synoptos to establish social media monitoring and advisory services on the best ways to filter, analyze and interpret social commentary. Synoptos provided the software and technical assistance to enable agency officials to categorize the reasons people gave on social media for not getting the flu vaccine.

Results

The research identified the main reason for avoidance of the vaccine to be a fear of side effects, and uncovered one unexpected driver: Many people were citing information from another federal agency—the Justice Department—about high numbers of lawsuits related to flu vaccine side effects.
